What is the good news of the gospel?

The Son of God who loved me and gave Himself for me (Galatians 2:20).

The man who wrote those words, the Apostle Paul, was someone who understood how amazing this truth was--that God’s Son, Jesus Christ, actually loved him. And not only loved Him, but willingly gave Himself for Paul.

What does that mean? That Jesus gave Himself?

To answer that we have to look at the cross. So many people today know what a cross looks like, they know the t-shaped wooden symbol that has something to do with church and religious services and a man hanging there. But is that all it was? Just a man who died so long ago who really has nothing to do with us today?

Friend, Jesus Christ was more than just a human like you and me. He was God. God who took on human flesh and lived here, walked the streets of this earth, and ultimately hung on that cross (John 1:14, Philippians 2:6-8). And all of that, coming down here from the perfect glory of Heaven to a sad, dark world that hated and killed Him...all of that was for me. All of that was for you.

Paul knew his past. He knew all of the bad things he had done and the way he had lived life his own way, against God. He knew he could never earn God’s love, or deserve God’s gift of grace. But Paul also knew he didn’t have to try to earn it because God gave it freely.

And, Friend, God still gives this gift freely. He doesn’t want you to try to earn His love or His forgiveness for your sin. He wants you to know that He loves you. He wants you to understand that when He died there on the cross all those years ago, it was personally for you. He died to pay for every one of your sins and mine, past, present and future. He took the punishment for them so that you and I would never have to pay for them in eternity, forever in hell, separated from the God who loves us.

He wants us in Heaven. He died to forgive our sins, and He rose again three days later to prove that His work was perfect and complete--nothing for you to add to it. No work to do. No money to pay. No religion to join. No good works to do. All of the work for salvation is complete. Done. Finished.

His offer to you today is to just take this free salvation gift by faith. The Son of God who loves you and gave Himself for you offers you this promise: “Whoever believes on me will have eternal life” (John 6:47).

The gospel, this good news, is really the best news you can ever hear and God’s salvation is the best gift you can ever receive.

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him will not perish, but have eternal life” (John 3:16).
